Undisclosed conflicts of interest and manipulation of scientific journals and popular press outlets have become the norm.
Despite the documented corruption of scientific journals by ghost-written papers and suppressed negative findings, studies funded by the pharmaceutical company were already required to disclose in biomedical publications in 2014 any conflicts of interest, to pre-register protocols for clinical trials, and to adhere to reporting standards like the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT).
The suppression of negative findings and ghostwriting attested to the limitations of such measures to ensure more trustworthy information is conveyed in biomedical journals to researchers, clinicians, and consumers. However, social science and psychology journals lagged behind biomedical journals in endorsing and enforcing these standards.
